Abbey Koningshoeven: La Trappe, De Trappist from
Beerbrewery “Onze Lieve Vrouwe van
The property where the abbey
“Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Koningshoeven” ("Our Lady of Koningshoeven") is located, was previously
owned by King William II. It was an infertile heath land with sparse small farms and a
In 1880 this territory was a refuge for Trappist-monks from France. These monks lived according the
Rules of Benedict. One of the monks was the son of a brewer. In 1884 the monks started a
small brewery because the cultivated heath land proved too poor for sufficient yield. This was the
start of the first and until recently the only Dutch Trappist brewery. The beer that is being
brewed on the Koningshoeven is called “La Trappe” and is now sold worldwide. The
range of 'La Trappe' consists of 9 specialty beers.
We of Bed and Breakfast Tilburg “Gust van Dijk” love to visit the abbey’s monastery shop to buy
some tasty stuff. Besides the Trappist beer the store sells the glasses to match in gift-wrapping.
The monks also sell Trappist bread and cookies from their own bakery. Furthermore the store sells
artisan products that are made in other monasteries, like soap, cheese, jam, honey and mustard.
The big reward for Gust –after doing groceries- is to walk through the “Vrouwen-tuin”
(Women’s garden) to the “Proeflokaal” (Tasting Room) to enjoy a Trappist beer. The
tasting room is an exact replica of the improved sheepfold, as it was introduced by the monks in
the 19th century.
Bed and Breakfast Tilburg “Gust van Dijk” suggests when you are in the Proeflokaal to also
enjoy a tasty lunch with monastery bread and/or a tasting of the various beers in small glasses. It
is a good place to relax after a bike ride. Or you could just read a book by the fire place to
enjoy the ambiance. Meanwhile the Proeflokaal has released several “La Trappe biking routes” to
explore the environment further.
